EDITORIAL: The closest yet

Fast food is always marketing something new, whether it's a burrito with Fritos or a tuna and pineapple pizza. (Yuck!) None of it is good for you, but most of it tastes okay. As more restaurants race to offer vegetarian options, Burger King claims it has a veggie burger that tastes like real meat.

The king is serving up what's called the Impossible Whopper. Question: If it's impossible, how does it exist? Guess we'll take that up with marketing later.

BK finally brought this sandwich to all of its restaurants nationwide, and we decided to give it a try the other hot Arkansas day. Veggie burgers are not a regular part of our diet, but this one, being billed as the closest thing to real meat, had us intrigued.

When we got it, the Impossible Whopper was $1 more than a regular Whopper. Not exactly sure what that extra dollar gets us. Superior attitude, perhaps?

As the moment of truth came, we noticed that it looked like a burger. It smelled like a burger. And after taking a bite, we can safely confirm it doesn't taste 100 percent like a real hamburger.

With that said, the sandwich wasn't half bad. We've tried black bean burgers and Burger King's regular veggie burger without any love for them. But the Impossible Whopper is probably the closest to the real deal. So there's a consolation prize at least.

Everyone is different, but this sandwich kind of reminded us of the burgers we used to eat in the school cafeteria growing up. So, a perfect replica of a cheeseburger, the Impossible Whopper is not. But we could finish one without scowling, so that's saying something.

Now back to eating like old journalists. That is, awfully.
