Senior pastor Pointer to join faculty

Dr. Phillip Pointer, senior pastor of Saint Mark Baptist Church in Little Rock, will join Philander Smith College in Little Rock as an associate professor of philosophy and religion, and as chairman of the department, it was announced Wednesday in a news release.

Pointer has led Saint Mark since 2012, which at more than 9,000 members as of 2017 is Arkansas' largest predominantly black church. The United Methodist-affiliated Philander Smith College is among the state's oldest historically black institutions of higher learning.

Roderick Smothers Sr., the college's president, said Philander Smith was elated about Pointer joining the faculty.

"[Pointer's] keen intellect and philosophical and religious insight will empower us to mold the Department of Philosophy and Religion into a contemporary model in which to serve the diverse needs of today's ministries," Smothers said in the release.

"I'm extremely excited to join the faculty at Philander Smith College," Pointer said in the release. "This opportunity allows me to expand the scope of my work as Senior Pastor of Saint Mark and to help shape the lives and minds of young scholars. Saint Mark is excited to be a partner with this historic institution."
