Deer coach leaves position

Deer will begin December in an unusual circumstance -- in a search of an interim boys basketball coach.

Adam Brothers announced his resignation from that position early last week, effective immediately. He becomes the second person to leave that position in less than a year as Elvis Middleton resigned following the end of last season.

Brothers, who moved from girls coach to boys coach after Middleton's resignation, led the Antlers to an 8-2 record this fall. His last game at Deer was a 53-43 nonconference victory over Bruno-Pyatt on Nov. 22.

"We were shocked," school superintendent Andrew Curry said. "At the same time, it was his decision."

The coaching vacancy was posted online shortly following Brothers' resignation. Curry said the job, which includes social studies teaching, has drawn interest and he has "a couple of interviews scheduled next week."

In the meantime, Deer girls coach Miranda Gilmore and high school principal Bill Mizaur will handle the boys coaching duties. The Antlers have a nonconference game Tuesday at Western Yell County.

Attempts to reach Brothers before press time were unsuccessful.
