Project to focus on transportation data

FAYETTEVILLE -- Federal money from the U.S. Department of Transportation will support a UA project to better visualize information about transportation networks.

The Transportation and Maritime Analytics Partnership Hub, to be known as TransMap, aims to use geospatial data to create an interactive tool for government and industry to better build and maintain transportation infrastructure, UA said.

"Forward-thinking policymakers understand that we must rely on large-scale datasets, which already exist, to meet the challenges of our nation's complex and ever-changing transportation system," Heather Nachtmann, director of the UA-led Maritime Transportation Research and Education Center, said in a statement.

The $1.5 million for the three-year project, from the Transportation Department's Maritime Administration, will fund work by several researchers at UA and also a researcher at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, according to the university.

Information from USASpending.gov describes the award as a contract between the Transportation Department and the University of Arkansas System.

Jazz saxophonist to offer expertise

FAYETTEVILLE -- Dave Liebman, a recipient of the top jazz honor bestowed by the National Endowment for the Arts, will be an artist-in-residence this April.

Liebman's residency will last April 6-9 and will involve him leading workshops and master classes.

The saxophonist also will perform in a collaboration with university musicians, including a free on-campus performance April 8 and a concert April 9 at the soon-to-open Momentary arts venue in Bentonville.

"Bringing in a world-class artist, composer, performer and teacher as a guest artist is such a valuable experience for our students and our department," Eric Troiano, a UA saxophone professor, said in a statement.

Liebman is a recipient of the Jazz Master award from the National Endowment for the Arts, which has given the recognition to 158 artists and also the renowned Marsalis family since the award's inception in 1982.
