Conway takes over late against FS Southside

FORT SMITH -- For nearly two-and-a-half quarters, Conway could not gain control of its 6A-Central Conference opener against Fort Smith Southside.

The Wampus Cats changed that with a spurt late in the third quarter in a 62-48 victory over the Mavericks on Friday night at Southside Gymnasium.

"We've got to learn the importance of playing with a lead on the road," Conway Coach Brian "Salty" Longing said. "We're a full-court team that got put into a half-court game tonight. For much of the game, we were not very efficient."

The Wampus Cats put the game away with a 9-3 spurt to start the fourth quarter that expanded their lead to 58-42 with 4:53 left.

The Mavericks (5-9, 0-1) stayed in the game despite shooting 5 of 17 from the free-throw line, including missing 6 of 8 in the fourth quarter.

Conway had four players in double figures, led by Kylen Milton's 16 points. Williams added 13, and Caleb London and Terry Clardy each contributed 12.

Colton McBride scored 12 points to pace the Mavericks.
