Howard top South Central PGA professional

Barry Howard of Hot Springs has been awarded the 2018 South Central PGA Golf Professional of the Year.

Howard, the Hot Springs Country Club general manager since 2002, has been a PGA member for 27 years.

Prior to receiving his current honor, Howard was the South Central PGA Bill Strausbaugh Award recipient in 2013 and the Resort Merchandiser of the Year in 1999, 2003, 2006, 2010, 2013 and 2015.

Howard will be recognized March 3 at the South Central PGA Section Annual Special Awards Banquet at The Stoney Creek Hotel and Conference Center in Tulsa.

Birmingham-Southern edges Hendrix

Bruce Bright Jr. made the go-ahead three-pointer with 1:14 left to lift Birmingham-Southern to a 81-77 victory over Hendrix College on Sunday in Conway.

Bright's three-pointer put Birmingham-Southern up 78-76 before the Panthers made 3 of 4 free throws down the stretch.

Zachary Allison finished with 16 points for Birmingham-Southern (9-6, 3-2 Southern Athletic Association). Calvin Bak had 13, Bright had 12 and Christian Stewart had 10.

Seth Stanley led Hendrix College (6-10, 2-3) with 25 points. Kam Brasfield had 12 and Preston Smith finished with 10.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Birmingham-Southern pulls away

Derienne Black finished with 15 points while Emilee Olsen had 13 and Josie Wannemuehler had 12 to lift Birmingham-Southern (6-10, 3-2 Southern Athletic Association) to a 74-61 victory over Hendrix College on Sunday in Conway.

Hendrix led 34-31 at halftime before Birmingham-Southern outscored the Warriors 15-9 in the third quarter and 28-18 in the fourth quarter.

Birmingham-Southern shot 48.3 percent (29 of 60) from the floor while holding Hendrix to 32.3 percent shooting (21 of 65).

Jayia King led Hendrix (9-7, 2-3) with 16 points and Macy Moody had 13.
