Styx,

directed by Wolfgang Fischer

(not rated, 1 hour, 34 minutes)

This is a smart, modern, and mightily physical thriller that has much to say about the morality and responsibility of dealing with social and cultural challenges brought on by political choices.

Rike (Susanne Wolff), a competent and successful emergency-room phyisican, is realizing her dream vacation by embarking on a solo sailing journey to Ascension Island in the Atlantic. She finds herself in a challenging situation when, after a sudden storm she comes upon a dangerously unstable fishing boat overloaded with 100 refugees who are trying to get to Europe. Radio requests for help go unanswered. What's a doc to do?

With Gedion Oduor Wekesa, Alexander Beyer, Inga Birkenfeld; directed by Wolfgang Fischer.

The Best of Enemies (PG-13, 2 hours, 13 minutes) Predictability lessens the potential power of this affecting, racially charged cultural standoff in which civil-rights activist Ann Atwater (Taraji P. Henson) takes on Ku Klux Klan leader C.P. Ellis (Sam Rockwell), in 1971 Durham, N.C., over the hot topic of school integration. With Anne Heche, Wes Bentley, John Gallagher Jr.; directed and co-written by Robin Bissell.

An Acceptable Loss (R, 1 hour, 42 minutes) A wannabe thriller that despite good performances fails to deliver, this drama centers on former top U.S. security adviser Libby Lamm (Tika Sumpter), who finds herself threatened by associates from her scurrilous past including Rachel Burke (Jamie Lee Curtis), a powerful longtime politician with the mettle to achieve her goals, even if her means of doing so are outside the law. At stake: The outcome of the war on terror. With Ben Vavassoll, Clarke Peters; directed by Joe Chappelle.

Dead Trigger (R, 1 hour, 31 minutes) Although bloody and violent, this sci-fi horror story takes a mainstream approach to its subject and therefore doesn't amount to much. An unidentified virus attacks mankind, killing billions, then turns survivors into murderous zombies. Call Captain Walker! As played by Dolph Lundgren, he and a well-trained team of combatants band together to battle their attacker. With Isaiah Washington, Autumn Reeser; directed by Mike Cuff and Scott Windhauser.

Mia and the White Lion (PG, 1 hour, 38 minutes) Too artificial to be of any consequence, this overly familiar yet sometimes touching drama concerns a young Londoner who moves with her parents to Africa, where she encounters and befriends a lion cub. When she discovers a disturbing secret about her father that may threaten her beloved creature, she decides to grab the little lion and run away. With Daniah De Villiers, Mélanie Laurent, Langley Kirkwood; directed by Gilles de Maistre.

Escape Plan: The Extractors (R, 1 hour, 37 minutes) After security expert Ray Breslin is hired to rescue the kidnapped daughter of a Hong Kong tech leader (she's in a Latvian prison), his girlfriend is snatched as well. With Sylvester Stallone, Jaime King, Devon Sawa, 50 Cent; directed by John Herzfeld.
