SoMA businesses to leave the Friday night lights on

FRIDAY

SoMA After Dark

Business in Little Rock's South Main neighborhood will leave the lights on for SoMA After Dark, 5-11:45 p.m. Friday along Main Street south of Interstate 630. Among the participating merchants: Dos Rocas Beer & Tacos will stay open late with a sidewalk churros-and-ice-cream pop-up stand. Argenta Bead Co., open until 8 p.m., will make "quick and customized" charm bracelets with semiprecious stone beads for $8. And ESSE Museum & Store holds a reception for its "Purses with Purpose: Girl Scouts Through the Decades" exhibit, 4-8 p.m., with free museum admission and refreshments. Meanwhile, the fourth Little Rock Night Market, 5-11 p.m. at the Bernice Garden, 1401 Main St., Little Rock, will feature food, drinks, local vendors and music. Admission is free.

Community band

The North Little Rock Community Concert Band will perform at 7 p.m. Friday under the canopy in the center of Lakewood Village shopping area, off McCain Boulevard (between McCain Mall and North Hills Boulevard) in North Little Rock. Conductor Rico Belotti calls his musical program "100% Chance of Rain" (although in case of actual inclement weather the concert will be canceled). The program includes a medley of "rain" music arranged by Jack Bullock, plus Karl King's Prestissimo; Josef Strauss' Feurfest Polka, complete with anvil soloist; Douglas Wagner's Symphony, a medley of 14 themes from symphonies; The National Fencibles March by John Philip Sousa; and Themes Like Old Times II, a medley of World War I-era tunes arranged by Warren Barker. 'Organized' tribute

Bruce Neswick, canon for music at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Portland, Ore., will play for a Solemn Evensong service and subsequent organ recital, 7 p.m. Friday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 4601 John F. Kennedy Blvd., North Little Rock. It's "in thanksgiving" for the ministry of Rees Roberts, who is leaving his post as the church's organist and choirmaster, in August to resume studies at Arizona State University in Tempe.

For the service, Neswick will play opening and closing voluntaries by Herbert Howells (Siciliano for a High Ceremony) and Peter Hurford ("Let God Arise"); for his recital, he will play L'Ascension by Olivier Messiaen; the fourth movement, "Adagio," from the Third Symphony, op.28, by Louis Vierne; Piece d'Orgue (Fantasia in G major), BWV 572, by J.S. Bach; and an improvisation on submitted themes.

History sandwich

The Irv Daniels home, a private residence located at 1622 Waterside Drive, North Little Rock, will be the site of the Department of Arkansas Heritage's June Sandwiching in History program, noon Friday. The one-hour event includes a tour of the 1965 house — one of only 10 designs in Arkansas by architect Frank Doughty, heavily influenced by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright and E. Fay Jones, for whom Doughty worked at one time. Admission is free; park along Waterside Drive (being mindful of traffic) and walk to 1622. 'Defying Gender'

"Defying Gender: An Exhibition of Art Defying Gender Expectations" goes on display with a reception, 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Circle Gallery at Emergent Arts, 341A Whittington Ave., Hot Springs. The opening reception coincides with the Spa City's monthly Gallery Walk. In partnership with the Hot Springs LGBT Alliance, a gallery crawl starts from Emergent Arts at 7:30 and ends up at a pride-theme celebration featuring performances by Suki Pearl, Xavier Jackson, Celina Chambers, Raven Rose and others at Grateful Head's Gin Joint, on the lower level, 100 Exchange St. Admission is free, proceeds from a signature drink benefit Lucie's Place, a Little Rock LGBT-specific shelter.

Kidstock kickoff

The Central Arkansas Library System kicks off its annual Summer Reading Program with the Kidstock Family Music Festival, featuring magician-entertainer Tommy Terrific, visitors from the Little Rock Zoo, The Kinders and the Dogtown Ukulele Band, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday at the Hillary Rodham Clinton Children's Library & Learning Center, 4800 W. 10th St., Little Rock. The event will also include bubbles, sidewalk chalk, lawn games and snacks, all to highlight the Summer Reading Club — registration is free and available online at cals.beanstack.org. Dog Days event

The inaugural Dog Days of Summer event, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at Bernice Gardens, 1401 Main St., Little Rock, features doggie splash mats, doggie snow cones and a dog trick contest to highlight pet-friendly area businesses and to raise money and awareness for Central Arkansas Rescue Effort and Arkansans for Animals. 'Unorganized Thoughts'

The South Arkansas Arts Center, 110 E. Fifth St., El Dorado, holds an artist's reception, 6-7:30 p.m. Saturday for Texarkana, Texas, artist Cindy Holmes and "Unorganized Thoughts," her exhibit of acrylic works and collages, on display through June 26 in the center's Price and Merkle Galleries.
