Herbal art
"Melissa Cowper-Smith: Natural Treatment, 2018-2019," a series of pigment prints on handmade paper chronicling Cowper-Smith's interviews with herbalists in the Ozark and Central River Valley regions of Arkansas and their complex relationships to healing, illness, and belief, goes on display as part of the 2nd Friday Art Night activities, 5-8 p.m. Friday in the Loft Gallery, Galleries at Library Square (formerly the Butler Center Galleries), 401 President Clinton Ave., Little Rock. Guys and Dolls
A cadre of New York gamblers, a corps de ballet of Hot Box Girls and a corps of not-so-successful Salvation Army soul savers take the stage at Reynolds Performance Hall at the University of Central Arkansas, 201 Donaghey Ave., Conway, as the Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre opens its production of Frank Loesser's musical Guys and Dolls (based on characters created by Damon Runyon), 7:30 p.m. Saturday. 'Bad Astronomer'
Phil "Bad Astronomer" Plait, who writes the Bad Astronomy blog and author of Bad Astronomy and Death From the Skies, delivers a lecture, titled Strange New Worlds: Is Earth Special?, 7 p.m. Saturday at the Ron Robinson Theater, 100 River Market Ave., Little Rock. The talk is a collaboration between the Central Arkansas Astronomical Society and the Central Arkansas Library System, with funding from the Arkansas Space Grant Consortium. Admission is free. 'Ties to the Past'
"Apron Strings: Ties to the Past," a traveling exhibit of 12 aprons from the Great Depression to the present through which curator Joyce Cheney tells the stories of resourceful and creative women, goes on display Saturday at the Delta Cultural Center, 141 Cherry St., Helena-West Helena. 'Pops for Pops'
Members of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra will offer a Father's Day concert of light classical and popular music, titled "Pops for Pops," 5 p.m. Sunday in Morrison Hall, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 310 W. 17th St., Little Rock. Singer Stephanie Smittle will be the master of ceremonies and will sing the aria "O mio babbino caro" from Giacomo Puccini's Gianni Schicchi. The program will also include two marches, two tangos for orchestra (choreographed by guest dancers), Ennio Morricone's "Love Theme" from the movie Cinema Paradise, the "Allegro" movement from Wolfgang Amdeus Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and the "Andante non troppo" movement from Serenade for Strings by Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky. Kiril Laskarov will be concertmaster; the musicians will play without a conductor. Popsicles will be available after the concert in the cathedral garth. Admission is free. Lifetime achievement
DeWitt native Jo McDougall, the current poet laureate of Arkansas, will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Porter Fund, an organization supporting the literary arts in Arkansas, at a gala at 6:30 p.m. June 20 at the Clinton Presidential Center, 1200 President Clinton Ave., Little Rock. Former Gov. Mike Beebe will present the award, which carries a $5,000 cash prize. Tickets are $200. Call (501) 868-7172. McDougall is the fourth Arkansas writer to be given the Lifetime Achievement honor, which the fund awards every five years; the others are Donald Harington in 2004, Miller Williams in 2009 and Charles Portis in 2014.
