Golf course true gem

I just wanted to let Mr. Warren Stephens know what a pleasure it was to have the opportunity to volunteer at his wonderful golf course during the Arnold Palmer Cup.

You, sir, and your staff were wonderful hosts. Everyone was so courteous to me, as I'm sure they were to all the volunteers, during the tournament. My only regret was I had to leave that beautiful place.

The Alotian Club is a true gem here in Arkansas.

If this is control ...

I was reading an article in the paper recently that said cheaper gas, electricity, and used cars were helping hold inflation steady. Other articles have indicated that with inflation "under control," the Fed might not have to raise interest rates.

The thought that inflation is "under control" is hard for me to believe. I am not the oldest guy you might meet, but I have lived long enough to be called an old, old man. I was born in Oklahoma City many years ago, mainly to be near my mother (that is an old, old joke). My father worked for oil companies and was in sales, so we moved around the country quite a bit.

I am old enough to remember when the postage cost for a first-class letter was 3 cents, and it was that way for a long time. My father used to give me 15 cents and send me to get a haircut. You could buy a Hershey or Baby Ruth candy bar for a nickel, and I could get a one-dip ice cream cone for a nickel too. When I was a teenager, gasoline cost 18 cents a gallon. Some years later I graduated high school in Jonesboro and, shortly thereafter, I got greetings from Uncle Sam to join the military and World War II. I was on a train with a load of recruits, on our way to basic training. Somebody on my car had a radio. Every now and then, an advertisement would come on that sang, "Pepsi Cola hits the spot. Twelve full ounces, that's a lot. Twice as much for a nickel too. Pepsi Cola is the drink for you."

Years after that my wife and I used to go to the grocery store and buy food for our family (two kids) for a week. It used to cost around $20 to $25. Today for just for the two of us, it often costs over $100 (and I am not getting fat). Yes, inflation is "under control."

Disrespectful letters

President Trump and first lady Melania did us proud in the recent visit to royalty. He was elegant and dignified; she was elegant and gracious. It made the heart swell to be an American.

But every day I continue to see denigrating letters to the editor about Trump and everything from his policies and stands to the way he dresses and his hair or lack of. It seems the vast majority of letters printed are vicious and disrespectful and ignorant.

It is no wonder our society is in the state it is in--anything and everything goes as long as one is happy and freedom allows to do as one pleases. No respect for anyone, not even the president of the United States, or the office.

When the state newspaper continues to print hateful trash talk about our president, it does not help stem the flow. Freedom of the press, freedom of speech? Freedom to print fake assessments and fake news?

When people have nothing better to do or no more thoughtful opinion than to presume to instruct our billionaire president on how to dress or to make fun and belittle his lack of hair, I suggest these letters be put in file 13.

Leave Iranians alone

Firstly: Iran is surrounded by nations with nuclear weapons--Russia, Pakistan, Israel, and the U.S. fleet in the Strait of Hormuz. So who are we to say they shouldn't have their own nuclear weapons?

Secondly: What would we say if the Iranians had aircraft carriers in the Gulf of Mexico? Or possibly Long Island Sound? It wasn't many years ago that a U.S. cruiser in the Strait of Hormuz shot down an Iranian civilian airliner and killed all 200-plus people on board. Just who do we think we are?

Seriously, folks, if an Iranian cruiser 100 miles off the American shore shot down a U.S. passenger aircraft and killed everyone on board, what would we think of that? If the Iranian fleet was in the Gulf of Mexico, what would we think of that? What would we do if Iranian drones were flying close to our shore, spying on us--what would we do?

Time to stop our threats and bring the military home. Why don't we try leaving the Iranians alone and stop bullying them?
