Jimmy Carter is taking a swipe at the legitimacy of Donald Trump's presidency, saying Russian interference in the 2016 election was responsible for putting Trump in the White House.

The 94-year-old former U.S. president said Friday that he believes Russia's meddling "if fully investigated would show that Trump didn't actually win the election in 2016." Carter said he believes Trump "lost the election" and became president "because the Russians interfered on his behalf."

Carter made the remarks during a panel discussion at a retreat in Leesburg, Virginia, for donors to the Carter Center. It was broadcast by CSPAN.

Panel moderator and historian Jon Meacham asked Carter if he believed Trump was "an illegitimate president."

Carter replied: "Based on what I just said, which I can't retract, I'd say yes."

Millions of people agree with the former Presidents statement. We will never have an impartial investigation into Russian interference during the 2016 election. He did NOT say President Trump colluded with the Russians, but rather that the Russians interfered with the election. They did and will do it again.

Go hogs still hasn’t read the Mueller report. The Russian meddling was one of many factors that put Trump over the top in a close election.

Hey ERMAL, Carter did NOT say that Russia interfered in the election, he said that the Russian interference in the election caused Trump to win the election when otherwise he did not. This is a big difference. ERMAL, either your logic is faulty or you blatantly misrepresented what Carter said. And Carter may well believe that Russia interfered, but there is no way that anyone could rationally say that such interference handed the election to Trump. That is irresponsible of Carter to say such a thing, but not unexpected. Although he is a fine and decent human being, he is an inept idiot.
