Isolation and racism

Am I a racist? Not in the most obvious sense. I am anti-racist in that I vote and campaign against those candidates who court or for any reason appeal to racists. I hate racism and the intentional ignorance that it requires. Most of my life has been insulated from any blatant racism because there were no people of color or Jewish people where I have lived. There should have been, but it was racism that made that isolation normal.

Technically, I am not a racist, but I hate that I haven't been more anti-racist. I am not dead yet.

Stop hugging the flag

One of the more unpleasant character traits periodically exhibited by the current occupant of the Oval Office is his pathetic penchant for "flag hugging." This was demonstrated most recently when he spoke to the CPAC conference and was displayed prominently on page one of Sunday's Democrat-Gazette.

This from a man who brags about not paying taxes; a man who uses his "bully pulpit" to denigrate private citizens; a man who mocks American war heroes; a man who avoided serving his country with a highly suspect case of "bone spurs."

At best this is a cheap political stunt. At worst it is a profound desecration of the national colors.

Keep Daylight Saving

Doing away with Daylight Saving Time and not following it is a bad idea and another example of state legislators over-legislating and placing Arkansas at a disadvantage to the rest of the country.

This would cause many problems: It would play havoc with TV schedules; less daylight for spring sports; less daylight for home projects after work; bad public relations with the rest of the country who follow Daylight Saving Time. I cannot believe that the majority of Arkansas citizens would be in favor of this if they really knew all the consequences.

Of Russian influence

In answer to your thoughts on Trump and Russian influence my query would be: What were Ambassador Sergey Kislyak and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and a handful of other Russians doing in our Oval Office in May 2017? Mr. Trump then reportedly chose to share with the Russians classified info the Israelis had given to our intelligence people.

Goodness ... perhaps a "Thank you." Worth some thought ...
