Walmart treasures

You never know what you’ll find

"You'll never guess what we found in Walmart last night," the conversation started. And with a beginning like that, you know you're in for a treat.

Some places in Arkansas don't have much of a night life, and that's typical of small towns where most shops close not long after the sun goes down. But if the town is large enough, its Walmart might be open 24/7. Russellville has such a Walmart.

On Wednesday around midnight, the store wasn't very busy, and employees had pallets out doing the stocking they probably can't do during the day. It was chilly outside, so after our shopping, we were in no hurry to return to our vehicle.

Wandering around, we came upon something we'd never seen before. It was a Monopoly-style game customized for the home of the Hogs. The game is called Fayetteville*Opoly and works similarly to the famous board game. Players move tokens around, buy Fayetteville locations (like Dickson Street instead of Boardwalk), and build houses for rent in an attempt to bankrupt the other players.

The back of the box contained a label saying Fayetteville*Opoly is a fun way to experience the "Athens of the Ozarks." We'd never heard the funky little city called that before, but the game sure does look like fun.

Apparently it's made by an Ohio company called Late for the Sky and makes other custom "Opoly" games for cities and subject matter. A quick glance at its website shows everything from MilwaukeeOpoly to SharkOpoly. It's quite impressive.

Our favorite part? The game included Regnat populus on the back of the box. Not only do the people rule in Arkansas, but the gaming world now knows it. How's them apples? Or rather, how's them hats and thimbles?
