Super supper

Arkansas Baptist College’s annual fundraiser has a soulful vibe

"It never rains in Southern California." Or so goes that hit by the '90s R&B group Tony! Toni! Toné! song.

That can't be said for central Arkansas these days, but an otherwise very wet May 2 did have a bit of mercy for those entering and leaving Arkansas Baptist College's annual fundraiser, Supper & Soul. The event, into which the college's alumni program segued, took place at the Metroplex in Little Rock.

Guests started the evening out line-dancing to DJ-spun music and sipped beer, wine and a variety of cocktails highlighted on a special menu. Making brief remarks were Regina Favors, interim president of the college; and Fitz Hill, executive director of the Arkansas Baptist College Foundation. The supper part of the evening had its own soul: Black Swan Catering provided a mind-blowing buffet that included assorted meats, vegetable dishes, a couple of Louisiana entrees -- red beans and rice and chicken jambalaya -- breads and desserts.

"Broadway" Joe Booker of KIPR-FM and KOKY-FM, introduced the night's featured performers: Tony! Toni! Toné! Decked in slim-fit animal-print suits and African garb, the trio got the crowd in front of the stage grooving along and phone-photo-ing to those hits -- "Feels Good," "Anniversary," "Pillow," "If I Had No Loot," "Little Walter" and yes, "It Never Rains (in Southern California)." A few technical issues didn't stop the show, which the men ended by inviting several women from the audience to join them. Afterward, Tony! Toni! Toné! posed for photos with attendees.
