Little Rock Zoo admission free to military on Memorial Day

Visiting the Little Rock Zoo will be free for active military service members and veterans with valid IDs on Memorial Day.

The zoo will also have special shows and a $5 lunch special each day of the Memorial Day weekend. Patrons can see bald eagle Lynn at 11 a.m. each day.

The zoo has a $2 admission discount for military families with valid active duty, veteran or dependent IDs.

Marathon officials to host June event

Little Rock Marathon race officials, along with the city's Parks and Recreation Department and area business Rock City Running, will host a free running and walking event on June 5 in celebration of Global Running Day.

Global Running Day is a grass-roots effort of leaders in the running industry to promote running and walking as a healthy, easy and accessible form of exercise. The event will kick off at 6 a.m. in Murray Park.

The running and walking event will not be timed and any distance is acceptable. Water, refreshments and giveaways will be available.

The event is free, but registration is required. The first 200 registrants will receive refreshments and marathon gear on the morning of the event. Online registration is available at globalrunninglittlerock.racesonline.com/register.

Group seeks input on city government

On Monday evening, residents are invited to fill in the blank to the following: "The best form of government is that which _."

The city's Governance Structure Study Group, which is working to make a recommendation on the best form of government for the city, will hear comments from the public in a forum beginning at 6 p.m. in the banquet hall of the Centre at University Park at 6401 W. 12th St.

The city Board of Directors passed a resolution to create the study group in December. It includes seven ward representatives selected by city directors from those wards and four at-large members appointed by at-large directors and Mayor Frank Scott Jr.

Women voters group to host mayor's talk

The Pulaski County League of Women Voters will host a talk by Mayor Frank Scott Jr. on possible changes in the city's form of government and board composition on Monday.

The meeting is open to the public and will be held in Fletcher Library at 823 N. Buchanan St. It's scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

Changes to the form of government that have been discussed include a move from a city manager form of government to a mayor/council one and removing or repurposing at-large representation on the city board.

Meetings to focus on street projects

The city will hold two public meetings this week to inform residents about street improvement projects.

On Monday, representatives from the city's Public Works Department will discuss a project to reconstruct 10th Street. The meeting will be held at the Willie Hinton Neighborhood Resource Center at 3805 W. 12th St.

On Thursday, city employees will discuss a project to reconstruct 19th Street. That meeting will take place at the Centre at University Park at 6401 W. 12th St.

Both meetings are to begin at 5:30 p.m.
