Pine Bluff police get grant for body cameras

PINE BLUFF -- The Pine Bluff Police Department will purchase 20 new body cameras thanks to a grant from Tyson Foods, according to Chief Kelvin Sergeant.

The department has about 50 patrol officers on the streets and deploys about 30 body cameras, Sergeant said. The $13,549 grant will allow the department to outfit almost all of its officers with the cameras, he said.

The department typically deploys each body camera for an eight-hour shift before the camera is recharged for eight hours and then sent out for another eight-hour shift, Sergeant said. The 16-hour cycle shortens the life of the camera batteries, the chief said.
