Traffic shifts, delays part of I-630 project

Cars cruise along Interstate 630 near the Barrow Road exit in Little Rock on Friday. Starting Sunday at 8 p.m. westbound traffic on I-630 will shift toward the outside lanes of the work zone between University Avenue (Exit 5) and Baptist Health Drive (Exit 7). Work on the $87.4 million project to widen a section of Interstate 630 in west Little Rock will involve shifting traffic and closing lanes in both directions on the interstate as well as on John Barrow Road through the middle of next week, the Arkansas Department of Transportation said.

Eastbound traffic on I-630 between Baptist Health Drive and South University Avenue is being shifted toward the outside shoulder in an operation that began Friday night and is expected to continue through 6 a.m. Monday, weather permitting.

The shift will require periodic 15-minute traffic stops on adjacent ramps and main lanes, the department said. Drivers should consider using alternate routes as delays may occur, the department said. Traffic will be controlled using signs and barrels.

Shifting westbound traffic on I-630 toward the outside lanes within the work zone between South University Avenue and Baptist Health Drive will require periodic 15-minute traffic stops on adjacent ramps and main lanes between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. daily through Wednesday, weather permitting.

Drivers may consider alternate routes as delays may occur, the department said. Traffic will be controlled using signs and barrels.

Also, the outside lanes of John Barrow Road will be closed from the I-630 overpass north to Cloverhill Road to accommodate paving operations between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. daily through Wednesday, weather permitting.

One lane of traffic will remain open in both directions, the department said. The I-630 westbound on and off ramps will also remain open, but crews will be working on the ramp pavement. Flagging operations will be used to direct traffic around the pavement work.

The work is part of a project to widen a 2.2-mile section of I-630 between South University Avenue and Interstate 430 to eight lanes from six. The project is estimated to be complete in early 2020.
