Auction aids in the fight against cystic fibrosis

Lew Dillahunty was honored Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's Breath of Life Gala in the William Grant Still Ballroom at Robinson Center, with a crowd of almost 400 looking on.

Anne and Mike Preston, last year's honorees, presented the Breath of Life award to Dillahunty, who has served on the gala committee since 2014. He received the 2018 Claudia Fulton Volunteer of the Year Award. Fulton, who died in 2001 of complications related to cystic fibrosis, was Dillahunty's father's cousin. His cousins, John Miller and Jordan Miller Pennino, also have the disease.

Auctioneer Gaylen McGee banged the gavel signaling the highest bids on live auction items including a 1981 Corvette ($13,500); an Escape to Napa Valley ($5,000); a 14-karat gold, 1.19-carat diamond necklace ($4,000) and a Barry Thomas painting ($2,000).

Cystic Fibrosis Ambassador Mallory Hicks shared with the audience her positive experience with participating in a trial using Trikafta, a breakthrough drug that targets an underlying cause of cystic fibrosis.

Guests donated $30,000 in the Bid for a Cure that was held immediately following Hicks' speech.
