FORT SMITH — Fort Smith police are investigating after human remains were found Tuesday.

Aric Mitchell of the Police Department said in a Wednesday morning news release that the department was notified Tuesday afternoon of possible human remains being found in a wooded area near Riverfront Drive. Investigators found some skeletal remains and clothing after a brief search.

The identity of the person as well as a cause and time of death have yet to be determined, Mitchell said. Investigators are processing the scene.
