Necronomnomnom: Recipes and Rites From the Lore of H.P. Lovecraft by Mike Slater

Fans of H.P. Lovecraft and the macabre will love Necronomnomnom: Recipes and Rites From the Lore of H.P. Lovecraft (Countryman Press, $24.95) by Mike Slater, edited by Thomas Roache and illustrated by Kurt Komoda. The grimoire's 50 recipes are written in the style of Lovecraft's Necronomicon and are sure to bring a smile (or shudder) to anyone who reads them, as we did when reading the incantation for At The Fountains of Maddness — a beverage of "3 to 6 Ursus-Gao-mai encased in ice, 10 ounces of carbonic tincture of Black Cherry, 2 ounces of Scarlet Syrup of Maraschin-Yoh and 1 ounce half-and-half" with instructions to "Freeze the creatures and keep them frozen! The Bears cannot be trusted. Place them in a chilled cylinder. Mix the carbon-bearing base substrate with the dark syrup. Damn the Professor's theory about the milk proteins! Add for disturbing results. Take additional gelatinous subjects. These must be submerged fresh. Perfectly safe, vivisected as they are. Serve and drink down your helpless victims."

Need a translation? Don't worry, the second part of the impishly illustrated book includes plain-English versions of the recipes. Other recipes include The Grape Old Wons (baked beef and sausage wontons), Dining Trapezohedrom (iceberg wedge salad), Tsathogguambalaja (seafood jambalaya), Curried Favor of the Old Ones (slow cooker sweet potato chicken curry), Cultists in Robes (pigs in a blanket), Tcho-Tcho Chow Chow (roasted cauliflower with pepper relish), and To Summon Nyarlathotapioca (pomegranate tapioca pudding).
