A woman died Friday afternoon from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while officers spoke to her near the Arkansas River, a police spokesman said.

North Little Rock police responded to a report of a suicidal person at 2:15 p.m. Friday near the Junction Bridge at Riverfront Park, where a woman in her early 20s had a handgun, a spokesman said. The woman stepped into the Arkansas River and shot herself as police officers tried to talk her into putting the gun down.

The woman was transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, the police spokesman said.
