OPINION | EDITORIAL: Finally, a good record

SEEMS LATELY that only bad records are being broken, with covid-19 numbers continuing to spike across the country. Fortunately, on Monday, a new record was shattered, and it’s finally the good kind.

As the economy bounces back a bit here and there, Americans took advantage of online discounts and sales earlier this week. Here’s more from NBC News:

“Cyber Monday just became the biggest online shopping day in U.S. history, with consumers spending $10.8 billion online. Purchases totaled $12 million a minute between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. PT, with around 37 percent of total purchases coming from smartphones as more shoppers migrate to buying on social media. Curbside pickup was up 30 percent since last year.”

With the way businesses have been hurting since March, this record-breaking retail activity is certainly good news for the lot of them.

Apparently buyers were quick to snatch up computers, toys, sporting goods, electronics and appliances. Now let’s hope buyers who shopped for Christmas gifts are planning on mailing them.

Our economy can use all the boosting it can get right now. There’s still quite a bit of recovery to go just to get back to where we were in March.

So if you shoppers want to break some more records before Santa boards his sleigh, go for it. You won’t hear businesses complain. Just make sure if you do hit stores that you’re wearing masks. Or use curbside pickup.
