'Wartime' symposium
Cherisse Jones-Branch and retired Army Brig. Gen. Gracus K. Dunn will be the speakers for "African-American Soldiers in Wartime," a free, one-day symposium about black Americans serving in U.S. wars, 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, 501 W. Ninth St. in Little Rock.
Jones-Branch, a Persian Gulf War veteran, will present a talk titled "A Debutante, a Soldier and a War Veteran." Dunn will discuss "African-American Services in America's Wars." Students in the U.S. Army Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps at Wilbur D. Mills University Studies High School will post the colors.
The Black History Commission of Arkansas, an advisory board of the Arkansas State Archives, is sponsoring the symposium. Admission is free; reservations must be made by Jan. 27 at archives.arkansas.gov. Refreshments will be provided.
Artist fellowships
The Arkansas Arts Council is offering up to nine $4,000 Individual Artist Fellowship in the categories of Literary Arts, Screenwriting Performing Arts, Theatre Director Visual Arts and Painting (except for works on paper). Grant research
The Arkansas Arts Council, in partnership with the Central Arkansas Library System, will hold a "Conducting Prospect Grant Research" workshop with consultant Brenda Mauldin, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Jan. 21 on the third floor of the CALS Main Library, 100 S. Rock St., Little Rock.
The workshop, part of the Arts Council's GetSmART! Learning Series, introduces participants to the Foundation Center's Foundation Directory Online, through which they can find possible grant funding and grant-writing guidance. Participants should take a thumb drive to save research results.
