EL DORADO -- An official of the Murphy Land Company today said: "We are making necessary preparations to set the six-inch casing for testing the sand in Trinity well at the 1,963-foot level. It is hoped that this test can be made during the next 10 days." E.L. Adams and F.W. Margarum, directors of the Trinity Petroleum Corporation, arrived here today from New York.

• The Pine Bluff School Board filed a motion Tuesday in federal District Court asking Judge Oren Harris to reconsider his order requiring conversion of grades seven through 12 to a unitary, nonracial system beginning with the second semester next Monday.

• Little Rock, North Little Rock and Pulaski County leaders have ruled out an arena proposal in the Crystal Hill area north of the Arkansas River but still plan to pursue construction of a regional arena and improvements for three existing facilities --the Statehouse Convention Center, Barton Coliseum and War Memorial Stadium. Mayors Jim Dailey of Little Rock and Patrick Henry Hays of North Little Rock and County Judge Buddy Villines plan to ask the state Legislature this year for help with the projects. They have in mind an arena that would seat 15,000 to 22,000 people and be near the Arkansas River in either downtown North Little Rock or Little Rock. They said a North Little Rock site would allow a "partnership" with Little Rock as both cities seek to expand their respective riverfront areas and create one tourism center. The three jurisdictions would ask the state for money for part of the project, although a price tag hasn't been set, Villines said. Dailey said the price could be based on the $30 million to $40 million mentioned in the Little Rock 2000 arena proposal.

• Sales of the Arkansas lottery's cheapest tickets have been lower than projected, and it's "a pleasant surprise," the lottery's executive director said Wednesday. At a meeting of the Arkansas Lottery Commission, Ernie Passailaigue gave an update on the lottery's performance, including the Cash 3 game, whose tickets cost as little as 50 cents. He said the game has historically been of interest to players with low incomes and from minority groups.
