Matthew Magre was disappointed to see his high school baseball career end prematurely, but the Fayetteville graduate has another baseball stop left: the University of Arkansas.

Magre, a left-hander, starred on the mound for the Bulldogs, but it was his work in the classroom that propelled him to an academic scholarship. Magre had a 4.24 GPA and a 34 on the ACT.

Doing well in school was just as important as playing well on the diamond, he said.

"It's a big part of my life," Magre said. "I always want to give it my best effort. I want to be the hardest worker in the room."

He is eager to play for the Razorbacks.

"It's every kid's dream up here to suit up for the Hogs," Magre said. "I can't wait to get on campus and start working out and being part of the team."

Volunteering was an important part of Magre's time at Fayetteville. He was part of a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society that raised $11,000 over a seven-week period.

Magre was a member of the National Honor Society, Science Club and Mu Alpha Theta at Fayetteville.

At Arkansas, Magre plans to double major in business and finance. As a resident of Northwest Arkansas, he's seen the effect businesses such as Walmart, Tyson and J.B. Hunt have made on the region.

"I'd like to put my name out there and leave a legacy," Magre said.
