State's milk output off 5% over '19 total

Milk production in Arkansas for the second quarter fell 5% when compared with the same quarter in 2019, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture released earlier this week.

Milk production in the state stood at 18 million pounds for the April to June period, down 5% from the same time last year. For the second quarter, the number of milk cows on farms was 5,000 head, down 500 or a little more than 9% from a year ago. A gallon of milk weighs 8.6 pounds.

The state's milk production was flat compared with the first quarter of 2020, according to the USDA release.

Nationally, milk production for the second quarter was up 0.4% to 55.9 billion pounds when compared with the second quarter of 2019. The average number of dairy cows was 9.36 million head, up 31,000 or 0.3% from the same period last year but 12,000 head lower than in the first quarter of 2020.
