UMC postpones General Conference

The United Methodist Church announced Wednesday that it will postpone its General Conference scheduled for May 5-15 in Minneapolis.

The denomination said in a news release that it postponed the gathering of delegates from around the world after the Minneapolis Convention Center notified the Church's Executive Committee that it would be restricting gatherings at the center per recommendations by the Minnesota Board of Health, the state's governor and the mayor of Minneapolis, due to the covid-19 pandemic.

There was no alternate date set for the conference as of Wednesday's announcement; the Commission on the General Conference will meet today via teleconference to discuss plans for the quadrennial meeting.
