FAYETTEVILLE -- A $205,000 gift from a family foundation will support poultry science students at the University of Arkansas.
The Phillip O. and Phyllis K. Carruth Foundation is establishing an endowed scholarship in honor of Phillip O. Carruth Sr., a poultry entrepreneur and former Russellville mayor. The foundation includes the couple's children: Phyllip Owen, Phylisa Diane, Phylana Kathleen and James David. The elder Carruth died in 2016.
The new scholarship award will go annually to a junior or senior majoring in poultry science with a minimum grade-point average of 3.0. In fall 2019, 103 UA undergraduate students were classified as pursuing a degree in poultry science, according to university data.
"The financial support we are able to provide our students through scholarships is absolutely critical to our effort to recruit, retain and graduate outstanding young people seeking careers in the commercial poultry industry," Dave Caldwell, head of the UA Department of Poultry Science, said.
