• Franker Mercer, a farmer of Yell county, was held under a $2,000 bond to the Federal Grand jury by W.S. Allen, United States commissioner, yesterday. Federal offices say they found two 16-pound lard cans, filled with mash, cooking on a stove in Mercer's home. A 20-gallon keg was used for a cap. Two barrels of mash and a quart of moonshine were also found at Mercer's home, officers say.

ARKADELPHIA -- Contemporary college students are real and they truly want to bring about a world of peace and love," Dr. William H. Drummond, associate superintendent of Washington State Department of Public Instruction, told graduating seniors at Henderson State College here Friday. A record 407 students were graduated in spring commencement exercises.

• The Pulaski County Special School District's superintendent urged parties in the 12-year-old school desegregation lawsuit Monday to find someone who can guide them out of the case and end federal court supervision of the schools. Bobby Lester made the comments at an unprecedented joint meeting of the three Pulaski County school boards, their superintendents and Gov. Jim Guy Tucker at the state Capitol. Little Rock School Board members called the meeting to discuss mutual concerns among the parties, including legislative threats of district consolidation. Lester favors a proposal to hire a Washington, D.C., law firm to help the districts and their attorneys evaluate their desegregation efforts, modify unworkable provisions of their desegregation plans and eventually seek unitary status or relief from court supervision. But other school officials have resisted the idea of paying more fees to another law firm.

• Seven-year-old Katie Castro has been fantasizing about an all-pink bedroom, and now, her mother says, that dream can come true. "She wants everything in the color pink," Ana Castro said. Katie's bedroom, along with the rest of a house of about 1,200 square feet, is being made possible by Habitat for Humanity, which on Saturday afternoon kicked off the first day of on-site building by raising the walls of the Castros' new house. The house is a landmark for Pulaski County's Habitat chapter. It celebrates the chapter's 20th active year and construction of its 100th house. Habitat for Humanity will be focusing on the different aspects of its program throughout the year, and the wall-raising of the Castros' house was the chapter's focus on construction.
