Police investigate PB shooting death

Pine Bluff police are investigating an early-morning homicide that happened Saturday.

Police were dispatched about 1:45 a.m. Saturday to the 1900 block of South Mulberry Street in reference to a man lying in the street, according to the Pine Bluff Police Department. Upon arrival, officers found an unresponsive man who had apparently been shot several times, the department said.

Jefferson County Coroner Chad Kelley identified the man as James Williams Jr., 43. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner April Davis because of multiple gunshot wounds, Kelley said.

An incident report said that police initially had trouble locating the caller who reported the incident but soon found him a block away on South Linden Street. The report said the man then led police to Williams' body.

The report said police recovered one .40-caliber Smith and Wesson shell casing and two 9mm shell casings at the scene.

This is the city's 12th homicide of 2020, occurring just three days after the city's 11th reported homicide.

On Wednesday, police responding to a report of shots fired found Jeremy Thompson, 20, seated in the driver's seat of a white 2017 Nissan Altima, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, according to a preliminary report.
