OPINION | LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Meanwhile, in reality | Give it another whack

Meanwhile, in reality

Seriously, the only issue you find with the Trump administration is the president's personality? What planet have you lived on the last four years? There are 217,00 dead Americans and a $3 trillion deficit. Children separated from their parents and kept in cages. Tear gassing of Americans for a photo opportunity. Threats to the free press. I could continue ad nauseam, but I think the picture is clear to most of us.

Give it another whack

I give Sunday's wordy editorial, "Decisions, decisions" recommending Trump's re-election, a D-. The recommendation is buried most timidly, in the 24th and final paragraph. Here, we learn that only by re-electing Trump can we save the country from a radical far-left agenda under Biden.

One gets the impression the paper wasn't proud and wanted to hide that recommendation. The editorial leads off with a misdirection about Little Rock School Board elections. While important for Little Rock, many readers seeing this likely moved on. The remainder of the rambling editorial tries to make a case for a choice election between Trump and Biden. In the writers' view, the choice is between an allegedly successful president whose only identified faults are his demeanor and tweets versus a candidate who they speculate could perhaps, just maybe be controlled by reprehensible far-left radicals.

They contend an "elephant in the room" is Biden's inability to match Trump's energy and mental sharpness. Perhaps the president's enthusiastic, astounding recall of the words "person, woman, man, camera, TV" convinced them.

I recommend a re-do. Unless the writers are too embarrassed, an endorsement must be full-throated. The title should be "Re-elect Trump." The writers must address other elephants in the room. One is the administration's reckless mishandling of the covid-19 crisis, costing so many thousands of American lives and billions in health-care costs. Another is why Trump's destruction of American social fabric by fanning flames of racism, fear and division shouldn't matter. The room is filled with other elephants. Crafting a credible endorsement of the worst president in history is no easy task. The writers can take their time.

Open all of it back up

Saturday, thousands of women marched in cities across the country. Got it. I would hope that masks were in full force. I also saw that Tennessee has pretty much been ordered to mask up. Now, if thousands of people are allowed to march and protest in cities across the country, then why can't bars, restaurants, churches, and all manner of small businesses be open? Why are large stores apparently allowed to proceed with business as usual without the curtailing? If masks work, then let all places be open. Let all stores and bars and restaurants be open, without restrictions. If people can congregate by the thousands to protest, then people can congregate to eat.

This is the conflicting and contradictory nature of the response to the Andromeda Strain that has driven people crazy. No logic. No consistency.

Our culture in peril

I believe the citizens of the U.S. to be a culture. Genocide: The deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political, or a cultural group. Isn't it the same thing if accomplished by negligence and incompetence?

It is what it is. Vote!

He earned re-election

Just read Philip Martin's opinion column in Sunday's paper. Seems he just cannot get over the fact that Donald Trump was elected president of the United States in 2016 and will most likely be re-elected in 2020.

Martin has called Trump names and never let up on his opinion that the president was involved in the Russian election interference. Never read where Martin, nor columnist John Brummett, ever acknowledged the findings of the Mueller report clearing the president. Maybe I missed it.

In the recent column Martin said that the American people failed a basic test of decency by voting for Donald Trump in numbers sufficient to secure his election. Was he implying that President Trump voters are indecent? Hillary only called us a basket of deplorables. Both seem like pretty harsh statements to make about people that looked at both candidates and cast votes for a person with a vision to make America great.

I believe President Trump has kept his promises in so many ways, as indicated in the "Decisions, decisions" editorial in Sunday's paper, with the writer saying that it was remarkable that he has kept so many of his campaign promises, especially compared to previous presidents. Go and read of promises kept by his administration. There is also a partial list of items proposed by the liberal radical left which can be devastating to our country.

As a Christian I wish to add other reasons for voting for the president. I believe he has given a voice to the church and the unborn, moved our embassy to Jerusalem, appointed conservative judges, made USA energy independent, supported school choice, brought peace to the Middle East, created tremendous numbers of jobs and new businesses, and made America prosperous. Trump 2020.
