White Hall on track to accept part of Claud Road from state

In order to avoid any future bumps in the road, the state is turning over about four-tenths of a mile of Claud Road to the city of White Hall.

"It will become a part of the city's street system," said Mayor Noel Foster.

According to an ordinance that passed unanimously Monday evening at the White Hall City Council meeting, the city requested that the Arkansas Department of Transportation release a portion of the local access road on the Interstate 530 Frontage Road System signed as Claud Road.

The portion runs from the junction of Boast Road to U.S. Highway 270.

According to Dave Parker, the highway department's public information officer, the transfer will include some "re-mapping or additional surveying" on the-right-of-way of the road.

With the acceptance of the transference of the property, the city agreed to its maintenance, Foster said.

The ordinance goes into effect immediately.

This measure could potentially prevent any future problems as this area of White Hall is growing at a rapid rate, Foster said.

SHERIDAN ROAD WIDENING

Nearby, the prep work continues for the widening of Sheridan Road, or U.S. 270, inside White Hall continues, Parker said.

"The right-of-way work is close to 65-percent done, and the utilities portion almost halfway complete," said Deric Wyatt, the highway department's District 2 Engineer, who is overseeing the project. "They expect to open bids on the work in the first quarter of 2021."

In September, Wyatt said, "this project will widen the existing highway to four lanes with a center left turn lane, and include the addition of curb and gutter with storm drains and sidewalks along both sides of the highway."

The widening will run from the intersection of U.S. 270 and Arkansas Highway 365-S to state Highway 104 to Highway 365.

According to traffic counts, there are about 8,900 vehicles traveling on the three-lane road on the west side of I-530 each day, with about 13,000 traveling on the east side during the same period.
