Church notes: Congregations prepare for Lent

Benton County

Bella Vista Community Church, 75 E. Lancashire Blvd., offers worship at 9 a.m. Sundays (traditional) and at 11 a.m. (contemporary). We are following social distancing guidelines for a safe and healthy worship experience.

Due to covid-19 concerns, we will not have Lenten Soup Suppers this year. However, you can follow along with us at bvcc.net for special Lenten devotionals on Wednesdays beginning Feb. 17.

Bella Vista Lutheran Church, 1990 Forest Hills Blvd., hosts traditional Sunday morning worship at 8:30 a.m. and blended worship at 10:45 a.m. Sunday School and adult Bible classes are at 9:45 a.m. Please wear a mask when entering and leaving the church, and social distancing is practiced. You can also visit the church on our website at www.bvlutheran.com.

The Lutheran Hour is broadcast every Sunday at 12:30 p.m. on radio station KURM-AM (790) and KURM-FM (100.3).

Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of Lent, is on Feb. 17, and there will be a worship service at 6 p.m.

The Shepherd's Food pantry is open every Friday from 10 a.m. until noon. This is a "drive-through" pantry, and visitors are asked to please wear a mask. Don't forget to collect the bar codes from "Best Choice" products as the pantry is able to redeem them for items needed. A container for the bar codes is by the mail boxes in the church.

First Presbyterian Church in Bentonville, 901 N.E. J St., is operating its food pantry as a drive-through from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturdays, including today. Please bring something (utility bill, etc.) that shows that you are a resident of Benton County, and the church is glad to serve you.

Highland Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Bella Vista, 1500 Forest Hills Blvd., will continue to present its services on its website or on YouTube (search "highlandchristianchurchbellavista"). A decision to reopen the church has not been made.

The Presbyterian Church of Bella Vista, 1880 Forest Hills Blvd., is livestreaming worship services at 10 a.m. Sunday on the website, Facebook page and YouTube, with no congregation present until further notice. Zoom Sunday School classes will continue as scheduled. Meetings and activities will be held by Zoom only for now. Please continue to mail your pledges to the church.

We will have a Lenten Study led by the Rev. Dr. Ronnie Prevost titled "Illuminating Lent" by Donald McKim. The six-week class will meet on Tuesdays at 3 p.m. beginning Feb. 23 through March 30. The first few sessions will be held via Zoom. If you are interested, please call the church office by Feb. 9 to sign up. Books are $7 each.

Unitarian Universalists of Benton County, 1400 W. Walnut, No. 113, Rogers, will Zoom the 11 a.m. service Sunday, when guest speaker Raven Cook, a student of African-American history and educator at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, will honor Black History Month with a message from history.

Unity Church of the Ozarks, 2200 S.E. J St., Bentonville, offers a Little Free Pantry by the front door of the church at 2200 S.E. J St. in Bentonville. Please help yourself when needed and help others by donating.

Village Bible Church in Bella Vista, 1591 Forest Hills Blvd., presents live worship service at 10:15 a.m. Sundays. Seating arrangements have been readjusted for social distancing and there are mask-optional and mask-required areas for those attending. The service is live streamed on Facebook; Vimeo Vimeo.com/user42482704; and later in the day www.villagebibleefc.org; and audio of the live service can be heard on 90.3 FM in the south church parking lot.

The Oasis Food Pantry is open each Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon for drive-through pickup.

WASHINGTON COUNTY

First Presbyterian Church in Springdale, 100 S. Gutensohn Road, has returned to both in-person (masked and distanced) and online services. Livestreamed worship services are always available on YouTube and through the church's website: www.fpcspringdale.org. Live services are masked and socially distanced.

The Lenten journey will begin on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17. While no in-person service will be held that day, the Rev. Kade Curry will post a message on the church website for viewing at any time that day. Additionally, all are invited to participate in a drive-through Imposition of Ashes from noon to 1 p.m. and again from 5 to 6 p.m.in the church parking lot.

Youth Director Adam Alexander announces a new Student Discipleship Book Club, "Page Turners." The ninth- through 12th-graders will be reading "The Screwtape Letters" by C. S. Lewis. It is a fictional compilation of letters between two demons who are tasked with turning a man away from God. Using this format, Lewis gives the reader his own views on Christian theology in an engaging way. Page Turners will meet following worship on Sundays at 11:30 a.m. Sign up on the Student Discipleship page of the church website or on Instagram.

Youth grades 6 through 12 are invited to the Student Chapel in the youth win for open-forum style discussion of faith topics Sunday mornings during Sunday School hours.

If you are struggling to deal with life due to the pandemic or for any reason, the First Presbyterian Church of Springdale has several Stephen Ministers who are trained and ready to help. They will meet one-on-one, in a way that is comfortable to each person, to confidentially provide Christian care.
