LITTLE ROCK -- Mail delivery services have been adapting to this week's severe winter weather in Arkansas, with safety precautions causing some delays and a few closures, spokespeople for the U.S. Postal Service and several delivery companies said Thursday.
The Postal Service closed 32 Arkansas post offices Wednesday, according to its website, but most of those offices opened Thursday, said Nikki Johnson, the Arkansas corporate communications contact for the Post Office.
"In some locations, service may be temporarily suspended if delivery cannot be made safely," Johnson said.
She did not have specific information about where service is suspended, but she said the Postal Service "considers the safety of its employees and customers among its highest priorities."
The Postal Service asks customers to help ensure safe mail delivery by clearing snow from "sidewalks, walkways, steps, porches and all approaches to mailboxes," Johnson said.
The weather has also delayed deliveries from Amazon, FedEx and UPS, spokespeople from all three said on Thursday.
Arkansas is one of eight states where Amazon temporarily closed sites "out of an abundance of caution," spokesman Daniel Martin said. He didn't specify which sites in the state were closed. Amazon's other closed sites are in Illinois, Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee, Texas, Indiana and Kentucky.
UPS is making deliveries and pickups in areas where it can safely do so, media relations senior manager Matthew O'Connor said, and the company is abiding by all road and airport closures.
FedEx express pickup wasn't available at any of the 75 pickup sites in Arkansas on Thursday, and ground pickup wasn't available at 19 sites, according to the company's website. Spokeswoman Heather Wilson said FedEx has "contingency plans in place to help lessen the effect of inclement weather on operations and service, and we are implementing those plans as we're able."
