Black history essay, video contest set

FBT Bank & Mortgage is hosting the Simple Salute Black History Month Scholarship Contest. The deadline to enter is Friday at 11:59 p.m., according to a news release.

The contest is open to high school seniors and college freshmen who live in Dallas, Cleveland and Jefferson counties.

Applicants must write an essay 2,000 words or less, or record a three-to-five minute video about an African American Arkansan who has positively impacted history.

Students must also be legal U.S. and Arkansas residents; be age 16 or older; planning to attend or currently attending an accredited college in the United States during the 2021–2022 academic school year; have a minimum grade point average of 2.0; and agree to provide proof of enrollment.

Two winners will each receive a $2,500 scholarship. Winning essays or videos will be selected by a diverse panel of judges and announced on March 10 via social media, according to the release.

"As these students submit essays and videos celebrating Arkansas history makers, I look forward to celebrating them, our future leaders and history makers," Jim Hulse, FBT president and CEO, said.

"It was important for FBT to highlight how African Americans have contributed to our society and way of life while helping students learn more about the people who were also born and lived in these very communities."
