The 18th Clearing the Air Communities of Color Conference and 22nd Arkansas Cancer Summit will be held virtually March 9-10.

The Minority Initiative Sub-Recipient Grant Office (MISRGO) at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and the Arkansas Cancer Coalition (ACC) will host the events, according to a news release.

The virtual conferences are open to the public. Sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 9 and from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 10. Registration is required and is available through March 4.

The summit theme is "Cancer in the COVID Era: Navigating Unchartered Waters." The event's purpose is to showcase the recent progress coalition partners have made toward meeting goals and objectives of the state comprehensive cancer plan and to provide opportunities for information sharing, networking and skill building.

The Clearing the Air theme is "Tobacco Control in the COVID Era: Navigating Uncharted Water." This session will inform attendees about progress and program outcomes by MSRGO and its grantees.

Speakers will include Sarah Shafir, managing director of National Partnerships & Innovation at the American Cancer Society, and Ebony Conley, Ed.D, executive director of Future Builders Inc.

"We're grateful for the partnership and opportunity to host Clearing the Air alongside the Arkansas Cancer Summit," said Marian Lothery, project coordinator of MISRGO. "We will provide practical skills and comprehensive information for individuals involved in tobacco prevention and education in minority communities and ensure attendees gain insight into innovative programs and practices from individuals who are dedicated to eliminating tobacco use disparities."

Trena Mitchell is executive director of the Arkansas Cancer Coalition.

"The partnership with MISRGO and the ACC is an example of our mission to facilitate and provide partnerships to reduce the human suffering and economic burden from cancer for the citizens of Arkansas," Mitchell said. "We must unearth the needs in our communities and leverage resources to provide information and services to meet these needs."
