Shi Chua Chang

Torrance, CA, 1924 - 2010

Shi Chua Chang, age 86, of Torrance, Calif., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at his home. Lovingly known as "Grandpa" to both family and non-family members, Shi was born in China on April 29, 1924. He grew up in Shanghai and subsequently attended the renowned Jiao Tung University, where he obtained a degree in electrical engineering and also met his future wife, Shu Hwa. After graduation, the couple moved to Taiwan and married in 1951. They had one son, Ming. While in Taiwan, both husband and wife worked for the government's telecommunications administration. In 1967, the family moved to Arkansas where Shu Hwa was teaching at University of Arkansas at Monticello. Shi attended the Graduate Institute of Technology at the University of Arkansas and received his Master of Science in Instrumentation. He was employed by St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center as the Director of Medical Instrumentation. Shi moved to Los Angeles in 1981 to join his son's family and worked for Hughes Space and Communication until his retirement. An avid gardener, Shi spent years cultivating his garden of geraniums, mandevilla, and bougainvillea. He loved to drink plain Lipton tea and was constantly in attendance at all of his granddaughters' soccer games and gymnastics meets. He is survived by his son, Ming; daughter-in-law, Won Na Ng; granddaughters, Kei Lin and Pei Lin; and niece, Jian Zhang. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Aug. 1, 2010, at Green Hills Mortuary Chapel, Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2010, at Pinecrest Memorial Park, 7401 Hwy 5 North, Alexander, Ark., where he will be laid to rest beside his wife.
