Mattie Louise Black Mattmiller

Mattie Louise Black Mattmiller, 88, of Gillett died Monday evening. She was born near Baton Rouge, La., on Jan. 13, 1922, the oldest child of B.W. and Carrie Black. She was married to Charles Fredrick Mattmiller Sr. on Feb. 2, 1942. She and her husband raised 12 children on a farm five miles outside of Gillett. She was a member of the Gillett United Methodist Church, was a beloved school teacher in both Gillett and DeWitt Schools, a Sunday School teacher and a friend. Surviving children are Ann Navarro and husband, George of Tallulah, La., Margaret Carlow of Gillett, Liz Fouss and husband, Dave of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Marvella Melnick of Cabot, Freda Mattmiller of Gillett, Carolyn DePascale of Hasbrouck Heights, N.J., Sherry Goff and husband, Al of Cushing, Texas, Charles F. Mattmiller Jr. of DeWitt, Darlene Anderson and husband, Dale of Medford, Wis. Other survivors include her sister, Velton Arbour and husband, Charles of Baton Rouge, La.; her brother, Ray Blck and wife, Frances Jean of Covington, La.; 21 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; three children, Linda Carter, John Mattmiller and Tommy Mattmiller; two sisters; and three brothers. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m., Thursday, August 19th at Gillett United Methodist Church under the direction of Essex Funeral Home, DeWitt. Memorials may be made to Gillett United Methodist Church.
