Martha Streeter Hays

Martha Streeter Hays, age 90, of 1404 S. Dakota St., Pine Bluff, Arkansas, passed away on Sunday, August 15, 2010. She was born in Crossett, Arkansas, on December 6, 1919 to the late Lloyd and Florrie Streeter. She was a graduate of AM&N College in Bluff (now UAPB) and received a BSE degree in Art and Elementary Education. She was married to the late Lawrence C. Hays of Pine Bluff. Martha leaves to cherish her memory a surrogate son and caretaker, Eddy "Chuck" Streeter (Janice), her grandchildren Dr. Leslie D. Streeter (Frances) of League City Texas and Chuneka Streeter of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; her great-grandchildren, Ryan, Rylan and Leslie David. Other survivors include two sisters, Rosa L. Watson of Crossett, Arkansas, Louisa Brown of Los Angeles, California; one brother, Eugene Streeter (Jessie Mae) of Crossett; a sister-in-law, Shirley Hays of Oakland, California; a surrogate daughter, Dorothy Harris McDowell of Portland, Oregon; two stepsons, John Palmer Hays and Lawrence Hays Jr.; a host of nephews, nieces, several godchildren, cousins, and friends. Martha taught in the Monticello and Watson Chapel Public Schools systems (Coleman Elementary and Edgewood Elementary) for 29 years. She was also an adjunct at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in the Art Department and a beautician. Martha was affiliated with many social and volunteer organizations such as the Crossett's Women's Club, the University Women, American Red Cross, Jefferson County Comprehensive Care, Dexter Harding House, United Way, and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2010, at 11 a.m. at St. John A.M.E. Church, 1117 West Pullen Street, Pine Bluff, Ark. with Rev. W.R. Norful, Sr., Officiating. Public viewing will be held at the church from 10:00-11:00. Funeral arrangements are being made by P. K. Miller Mortuary, 204 W. 2nd Ave., Pine Bluff, Ark. Family and friend may visit the funeral home on Friday, August 20, from 1-7 p.m.
