Jerry R. Barnes

Mr. Jerry R. Barnes, 73, died Friday, August 20, 2010. Mr. Barnes was a native of Hamburg. He graduated from Hamburg High School in 1954 and from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1961. He was a veteran of the United States Army. Mr. Barnes worked for Arkansas Best Freight for 18 years. In 1981 he purchased Fairfield Trucking Company and moved it to Hamburg and within the first year, he grew his company from one owner operator to over 30 and has over 200 drivers today. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Betty Grant Barnes of Hamburg; a daughter, Diane Barnes of Bishop, Georgia; two sons, Andy Barnes and wife, Rhonda, of Hamburg and Jay Barnes of Austin, Texas; a brother, Michael V. Barnes of Georgetown, Texas and two sisters, Susan (Sue) Marie Stell and Betty Cleo Murphy both of Hamburg. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, August 28, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church of Hamburg. A private burial will be in the Hamburg Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 202 S. Main Street, Hamburg, Ark. 71646 or to the donor's charity of choice.
