Raymond G. Greer, Sr.

Raymond G. Greer, Sr., age 86, of North Little Rock, passed away November 29, 2010. He was born September 8, 1924 in Conway, AR. He graduated from Conway High School, played football, basketball and baseball. He attended what is now the University of Central Arkansas, in addition to the University of Chicago and Southern Arkansas University. He was a member of Phi Alpha Zeta at UCA. Raymond was retired from S.W. Bell Telephone Company where he worked for 37 years. He was an avid golfer and was Past President of the Arkansas Telephone Golfers Association which he helped to organize. He managed a Boy's Club baseball team while he lived in El Dorado. He served with the 96th Infantry Division during the battle for Leyte, PI and also the Okinawa campaign. He was wounded in both campaigns and received the Purple Heart with an Oak Leaf cluster. He also received the Combat Infantryman Badge, along with the other medals he was awarded. Mr. Greer was a member and an ordained Deacon for over five decades at Park Hill Baptist Church, North Little Rock. He was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and served as an Alderman at both El Dorado and North Little Rock while living in those cities. In addition, he was also a former member of Civitan International and served as both President of El Dorado Club and also the Governor of the Ozark District which consisted of Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa and Minnesota. While serving as Governor he won International awards for the number of new clubs formed in a district. Mr. Greer was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James C. Greer and sisters Martha Sines and Rubye Smith. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Roslyn H. Greer; one son, Raymond G. (Jerry) Greer Jr. of Hot Springs; two grandchildren, Phillip D. Greer of Paragould; and Brandi A. Greer of Hot Springs, Ark.; two great-grandsons, Dawson and Payne Greer of Paragould, Ark.; and a great-granddaughter, Blakely Ann Greer, also of Paragould. A graveside funeral service will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery, Conway Arkansas at 2 p.m., Friday, December 3, 2010.
