Glyn Elwin Sawyer, Sr., age 87, of Little Rock, passed away on December 1, 2010. He was born to Charlie and Lena Sawyer of Hamburg, Arkansas on August 27, 1923. He graduated from Hamburg High School in 1941 and then attended Arkansas A&M College in Monticello for two years. He then joined the US Naval Reserves and received his Service Commission in 1944, and was honorably discharged in 1946. He graduated from the University of Arkansas School of Law in 1951 and practiced law in Hamburg until 1957. He then accepted an appointment as General Counsel with the Arkansas State Insurance Department. In 1966, he joined National Investors Life Insurance Company of Little Rock as General Counsel and member of the Board of Directors, where he served until his retirement in 1988. Glyn served three consecutive terms in the Arkansas State Legislature, representing Ashley County, from 1950-1956, under three different governors. Glyn was a faithful member of Immanuel Baptist Church for 52 years, serving as a Sunday school teacher and usher. He greatly enjoyed golf, traveling, bridge and gardening. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Betty F. Sawyer; sons, G. Elwin Sawyer Jr., and his wife Rita of Conway, G. Scott Sawyer, M.D. of Houston, Texas; and granddaughter, Kristin Gill of Springdale; and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for the care of Dr. Joseph Beck, his office staff, and the nursing staff on the 7th floor Oncology unit at St. Vincent Infirmary. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 3, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home (501) 224-8300.
