Fred W. Thornton, 93, formerly of Star City, died December 14, 2010 at Conway Regional Hospital. He was born December 8, 1917 in Lincoln County to the late Woodfin G. and Lena B. Keahey Thornton. He was the retired owner of Fred Thornton Ford in Star City. He served on the Star City City Council and Water Commission, served on the Board of the Bank of Star City and he was also was a 32nd Degree Mason at Branchville Masonic Lodge #256. He also served in WWII with the US Navy from 1944-1946. Also preceding him in death was his wife, Martha Sue Reed Thornton whom he married in 1940. Survivors include one son, Reed Thornton and wife Gloria, of Conway; one daughter, Rose Thornton Knight and husband John, of Arkadelphia; five grandchildren, Tim Knight, Todd Knight, Scott Thornton, Steven Thornton and Stephanie Ann Thornton; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be 11 a.m., Friday, December 17, 2010 at Griffin Funeral Chapel in Star City. Bro. Elwin Ollar will officiate. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Friday. Burial will be at Leek Cemetery. Pallbearers are Stephan Hawks, John Berthelot, Todd Knight, Tim Knight, Scott Thornton and Steven Thornton. Memorials may be made to the Star City First United Methodist Church Building Fund at 300 Washington St., Star City, Ark. 71667. Arrangements by Griffin Funeral Service in Star City.
