Dr. Charles Gordon Winter

Dr. CHARLES GORDON WINTER, age 73, of Little Rock passed away Friday, Dec. 3, 2010. He was born Dec. 28, 1936 in Hanover, Pa. to the late Charles and Emma Mae Crouse Winter. He was preceded in death by his step-mother, Amy Elizabeth Grim Winter, of York, Pa. and his brother, Robert Alan Winter of Olney, Md. Charles graduated from Eichelberger High School in 1954. He received a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Juniata College in 1958, an M.S. degree in Biological Chemistry in 1963 followed by a Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1964, both from the University of Michigan. Dr. Winter was employed by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1964 and elected a Fellow of the Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund in the Department of Physiological Chemistry. He served the remainder of his career at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, Ark. as a researcher, teacher, and scientist for 41 years beginning in 1966. In 1978, Dr. Winter was awarded Honorary Research Associate in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Harvard University in recognition of his research work. In 1994, he became the Associate Dean of Academic Research at the University of Arkansas College of Medicine, a position he held until retirement in 2007. During this time, Dr. Winter chaired two building committees for Biomedical Research I & II on the UAMS campus that serve as the premier center of research in the State of Arkansas. In 2004, the College of Medicine conferred upon him the title of Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry. In addition to his scientific and academic contributions, Dr. Winter had a wonderful sense of humor and a lovely baritone voice. He was active in his community, coaching Babe Ruth baseball in Little Rock, Ark. for over 10 years as well as a church league basketball team. He was a member and elder of Grace Presbyterian Church and a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Betty Ann Fuhrman Winter, their three sons, Charles David Winter, of Little Rock, Dr. Douglas A. Winter (Angela) of Little Rock, and John Kevin Winter (Angela) of Cincinnati, Ohio. He is also survived by grandchildren Melissa and Benjamin Winter of Little Rock, Shannon Leigh Winter of Florence, Ky. and step-granddaughter Krista Rose Loose of Cincinnati, Ohio. Burial was held at the Black Rock Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Glenville, Pa. A memorial service to celebrate Dr. Winter's life will be held Monday, December 20th, 11 a.m., at Grace Presbyterian Church, 9301 Rodney Parham Road, Little Rock, Ark. The Rev.
