Steven J. Stone

Steven Joe Stone, 62, retired US Army colonel, died on 9 December 2010 from brain cancer. Internment will be March 15, 2011 at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. Col. Stone was born on July 7, 1948, in Beebe, Ark. He graduated from Pine Bluff High School, and from the University of Arkansas, in 1972, with a BS and MS in civil engineering. He entered the US Army in 1972 where he served for 25 years in the Medical Service Corps and earned a masters in public health from the University of Minnesota in 1977. Col. Stone's service included a tour in Australia as the Medical Service Corps exchange officer in the Royal Australian Army for the Director of General Health Services. For the last 28 years he has lived in the Washington, D.C., area. After retirement, Steve worked 12 years for LMI, most recently, as Program Director of Energy and Environment. He was an American Board Certified Industrial Hygienist and registered Professional Engineer. Col. Stone, an Eagle Scout at an early age, was active in his community serving as a youth coach, church volunteer, and Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 1530. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Sara Ruppert Stone of Fairfax; a son, Daniel Steven Stone of Fort Collins, Colo.; a daughter, Katherine (Katie) Stone Wertz and son-in-law, Paxton Wertz of Bel Air, Md. Steve leaves three sisters: Brenda Trimble of Paragould, Ark.; Jane Hall of Pine Bluff, Ark.; Patsy Pipkin and brother-in-law Bill Pipkin of Searcy, Ark. Survivors also include nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, other relatives, and many friends.
