George Walter Grimes
Conway, AR, 1923 - 2010

George Walter Grimes, 87, of Conway passed away on Dec. 24, 2010, at his home. He was born on June 19, 1923, in Enola, Ark., to the late Seth Walter Grimes and Clara Jane (Lane) Grimes. Mr. Grimes was a charter member, deacon, and faithful member of Bible Baptist Church in Conway. After spending the latter part of the war years working in the shipyards in California, he and his wife Maxine moved back to Enola where he farmed briefly. He then worked in construction with his father building homes in Little Rock. Mr. Grimes spent many years working as a welder, first for Neal F. Ward Manufacturing and then Starkey Construction Company's welding shop, retiring in 1985. He then spent his time raising a bountiful garden and tending his cattle. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 49 years, Lois Maxine; his brothers Ray Grimes and Arbie Grimes; and his sisters, Reba Jobe and Athalene Largey. He is survived by his four children, Michael Grimes (Margaret) of Conway; Paulette Rhodes (Mike) of North Little Rock; Clinton Grimes (Charlsie) of Heber Springs; Judy Tarrant (Rick) of Lubbock, Texas; a brother Jack Grimes of Mayflower; one sister Mary Rue Allbritton of North Little Rock; and a brother Charles Grimes of Whitehall; eight grandchildren, David and Kenny Grimes of Conway; Brian Bailey of Dallas, Texas; Amanda Bailey of Houston, Texas; Regan Glover of Heber Springs; Timothy and Joshua Tarrant of Lubbock, Texas; and Nathan Tarrant of Amarillo, Texas; six great-grandchildren, Cooper, Shelby, and Anna Beth Grimes; and John David, Mary Caroline, and Matthew Grimes all of Conway. He also leaves a host of family and friends, including his caregiver of several years, Fannie Reeves of Mayflower. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home in Conway on Monday, Dec. 27. Funeral services will be held at Bible Baptist Church in Conway at 10 a.m. on Tuesday with Brother Eddie Kelso and Pastor Vernon McGhee presiding. Internment will follow at Crestlawn Memorial Park.
