Maurine Rose Turney
Stigler, OK, 1923 - 2010Maurine Rose Turney of Stigler, Okla., died Dec. 24, 2010. She was born Sept. 22, 1923 in Hutchinson, Kan., to Ralph and Ila (Hook) O'Bryan. She married Art Turney on Aug. 25, 1951. They were married 54 years when he passed away in June of 2006. Maurine graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1941. She received her bachelor's degree from Sterling College in Sterling, Kan., and her master's degree in education from Wichita State University. She was an American History and Humanities teacher in Hutchinson from 1960 to 1980. Maurine and Art lived in Rogers, Ark., from 1980 to 2006. She was active in several local organizations including PEO Chapter BK and Community Concerts. She was involved in the local Garden Club and held regional and state positions with the Federated Garden Clubs. She belonged to the Alpha Delta Kappa organization. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Rogers and active in her Presbyterian Women's Circle. She is survived by her three children: Bill and his wife Lanelle Turney of Parkerfield, Kan., Nancy Turney of Stigler, Okla., and Mary Turney and her husband Rick Liquie of Fair Play, S.C.; five grandchildren: Lori Torres, Brian Turney, Willis Jones, Eddie Jones, and Dian Franks; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her brother Perry O'Bryan of Wichita, Kan. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Education was a critical part of Maurine's life. For that reason, the family asks that contributions be made in her honor to the PEO Program for Continuing Education scholarship fund. Checks should be made out to P.C.E. and mailed to P.E.O.
