AUBREY CHARLES SMITH, M.D., "Poppa", age 75, passed away at his home on Thursday, July 8, 2010. He was born on Feb. 13th, 1935, one of four children, to Aubrey Clinton and Dora Adele Bogy Smith in Pine Bluff, Ark. Charles was raised in Pine Bluff, graduating from Pine Bluff High School in 1953. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout at the age of 16. Charles attended Arkansas A&M for pre-medical studies and graduated from the University of Arkansas Medical School class of 1959 with a B.M.S. and M.D. Charles began his medical practice serving in the Department of Indian Services on a Crow Indian Reservation in Montana and later moved to complete his service at the Claremore Indian Hospital in Claremore, OK. He established his private practice in Chelsea, Oklahoma in 1962 until 1965 when he returned to Arkansas to begin a residency in psychiatry at UAMS. He maintained his private practice in psychiatry for 35 years and was on staff at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center and Baptist Medical Center. Charles served as an administrator of psychiatry at St. Vincent's and was the medical director for the RESTORE program at St. Vincent's. Charles was an active member of the Arkansas affiliate of the Arkansas Psychiatric Association, Arkansas and Pulaski County Medical Societies. Charles was an avid hunter and fisherman. He spent many weekends with his family at his lake house on Greers Ferry Lake. Charles was also a member of the Big Ditch Hunting Club near Stuttgart and Little Prairie Duck Club on Merrisach Lake near Tichnor, Arkansas. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, and infant sister, Audrey Adele. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Amata Browning Smith; children, Lisa (Pat) Hum, Tandy (Brent) Miller, Chuck (Marilyn) Smith, Kelly (Rick) Ward, Justin (Sheri) Gunn; grandchildren, Ashley, Patrick and Nick Hum, Lauren, Andrew and Emily Miller, Tori Smith, Rileigh, Braedon and Mason Gunn, Kathryn and Bentley Ward; sister, Peggye Smith Huddleston; brother, Jim (Cindy) Smith; a host of nieces and nephews; and his retriever, "Harley". The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Ben Johnson, Joe Morris, Linda Malcolm and Dana Mannis. A celebration of Charles's life will be held on Tuesday, July 13th, 2010, at 10 a.m. at Griffin Leggett – Rest Hills chapel at 7724 Landers Road, North Little Rock, Ark. 72117. 1(501)835-3515.
