Wilma Jane McEntire Norton

Wilma Jane McEntire Norton, 87, of Pine Bluff, died Thursday, July 15, 2010 at Jefferson Regional Medical Center. She was born September 6, 1922 in Pine Bluff, daughter of Luther N. McEntire and Nancy Steed McEntire Butler. Mrs. Norton was reared and received her early education in Pine Bluff, graduating from Pine Bluff High School. She attended the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, University of Arkansas at Monticello and Arkansas State University. She worked at the Office of Economic Opportunity in the Head Start program as a social worker for many years. Mrs. Norton was very active in the Jefferson County community. She was an active member of Immanuel Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for over 50 years. Mrs. Norton volunteered for several civic organizations including the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, Neighbor to Neighbor, lifetime member of PTA, Salvation Army and Jefferson County Extension Homemakers. She also served as past president and member of American Business Women's Association, where she was awarded the Woman of the Year Award. Mrs. Norton was awarded a lifetime membership as a Cub Scout den mother for her many years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. "Wimpy" Norton Sr., whom she married February 14, 1942 in Pine Bluff; son, James Norton; and her parents. Survivors include two sons, Charles W. "Wimpy" Norton, Jr. and C. Mac (Susan) Norton, both of Pine Bluff; and four grandchildren, Hunter, Kathryn, Winfrey and Rhine Norton. A memorial service will be 4 p.m., Saturday, July 17, 2010 at Immanuel Baptist Church with Reverend Don Taylor officiating by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors.
