Irene Umphers Carter

Irene Umphers Carter, 91, of Austin, Texas, formerly of Monticello, passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2010 in Buckner Villas Nursing Home in Austin, Texas, where she was a resident for the last 5 years. She was born March 3, 1919 in Iuka, Miss. She was the widow of Ben F. Carter, a retired teacher, having taught jr. high in Sherrill for 30 years, and was a member of Lake Side United Methodist Church in Pine Bluff. After leaving Monticello, she was a resident of Trinity Village for 11 years. During her 14 years of retirement in Monticello, she did volunteer work for many local organizations. Her favorites were First United Methodist Church and Drew County Red Cross. She was the daughter of the late Joe Umphers and Elsie Skinner Umphers. Survivors include one daughter, Lynda Henderson and husband, David of Austin, Texas. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Stephenson-Dearman Chapel, with burial in Oakland Cemetery.
